The School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University

invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary

(tenure track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in

Visual Media and Communication, to begin July 1, 2016. Deadline for

the receipt of applications is Friday, November 6, 2015.

Candidates should demonstrate strong potential to become leading

researchers in any subfield of visual media and communication. We

invite applications from scholars whose research emphasizes the

history, production, circulation, regulation, or uses of visual media.

Candidates may work in a variety of areas, including but not limited

to: Internet culture, video games, art, photography, film, television,

animation, information visualization, or digital imaging and design.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop new undergraduate

and graduate courses in visual media and communication, participate

broadly in teaching and mentoring of students, and contribute actively

to the research and administrative cultures of the School. Candidates

who are able to teach or advise students in the use of creative

research methods and/or visual media production are particularly

desirable.

Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Communication or a

related discipline by the date of the appointment, however outstanding

ABD candidates who are close to completion may also be considered.

Candidates should show evidence of theoretical and methodological

sophistication, possess an emerging publication record and demonstrate

potential to attract external funding, graduate students and

postdoctoral fellows. Consistent with Carleton University?s focus on

teaching excellence, the successful candidate will be committed to

developing innovative approaches to pedagogy, encouraging creative and

critical inquiry, and empowering students to become active citizens.

Candidates should prepare a zipped electronic dossier that includes a

signed cover letter; current curriculum vitae; a 2-3 page statement

describing current and future research plans; a sample undergraduate

course outline in ?Visual Media and Communication?; one writing

sample; and the names and contact information of 3 referees.

possibility.

The School of Journalism and Communication offers undergraduate and

graduate (MA, PhD) degrees in Communication, and Bachelor?s and

Master?s degrees in Journalism. In 2016, the BA in Communication

Studies will be re- launched as a Bachelor of Communication and Media

Studies (B.CoMS). Our approach to both research and the teaching is

broad and interdisciplinary, focusing on the critical analysis of

media and communication industries, institutions, practices, and

effects.
