January 25, 2017 GA Meeting Minutes

AHCS GSA

The Art History & Communication Studies Graduate Students’ Association (McGill University)

Agenda for the January 25th, 2017 General Assembly

6:00pm, B-22

PGSS update (Zoya/Robyn): radio station funding issue, law student society funding issue, Anthropology grad student society passed petition in support of Palestine and asked other associations to take part, request for more transparency on why renting rooms in Thompson House is more expensive than undergraduate spaces, intend to ask for transparency regarding art sold at Thompson House

Faculty meeting updates:

  • November (Sofia): update on Meet the GPD, full faculty town hall reminder, invited faculty to pub night, discussed possibility of supervisory feedback mechanism, gender divide in department volunteer work issue brought up – supervisors asked to speak with their supervisees about getting more involved in department issues

  • January (Victoria): More funding allocated for Faculty of Arts, faculty town hall reminder for March 15, new associate dean in library, new organizer for speaker series next year, book launch Feb.14 at Paragraphe with chapters by AHCS grad students, Media@McGill climate conference

Supervisor Feedback Initiative: no way to give anonymous feedback, may be uncomfortable to critique supervisor, too much additional work at the end of semester?, will bring up at faculty town hall, maybe have GPD receive reviews and have discussions with supervisors?

Pub night – January interdepartmental night with Physics, not much mixing, maybe change format to mix people amongst departments? Maybe next time do mix with History department? Or do something with AHCSCA with undergrads and faculty?

Faculty town hall – intend to raid gendered volunteer issue and supervisor feedback initiative

Café/research forum – call it a salon, have French food?, keep it informal, model it after PGSS Wine and Whine?, offer free drinks, remember to get alcohol permit

New Business:

  • Ayanna’s request for $200 to support joint initiative with IGSF approved.

  • Coffee & cleaning supplies for B-22 provided by co-presidents for use by AHCS graduate students.
